SOLUTION TO LAST MONTH'S QUIZ

  1. 15,21 (or 87,123, or etc....)
  2. 20,28 (or 116,164 or etc....)
  3. 25,35 (or 145,205 or etc....)

Notes. b2 = (a2 + c2)/2 Easily solved with pocket calculator. The quickest way is probably to use: c2 = 2b2 - a2 e.g. For Q.1, take b = 4, 5, 6..... and test x = 2b2 - 9 until x is a perfect square.

THIS MONTH'S QUIZ

Two pulley wheels with radii 12cm and 21cm, and centres 41cm apart, are connected by a drive belt as shown.

1. If the highest point of each pulley was marked with a spot of paint before they started moving, how many rotations would the smaller pulley make before both spots were again at the highest points?

2. If the smaller pulley is rotating at 1050 revolutions per minute, find the rotation speed of the larger pulley.

3. Find the total length of the belt.
